Hiking and Biking in the South of South Tyrol

Embedded in the green vineyards of Caldaro, located slightly above the village center of the township of Pozzo/Pfuß, “Das Badl” is the ideal starting point for numerous hikes and bicycle tours.

From here you enjoy the vista of Mendola, Penegal, Catinaccio, Latemar, Weißhorn and Schwarzhorn mountain. However, during your holidays you should not only enjoy the view, but also experience the mountains – whether by foot or on two wheels.

Our organized hikes with your hostess Ilse allow you to discover the diversity of the South Tyrolean Mountains.

We will gladly advise you on hiking and biking around Caldaro and are also happy to make individual route recommendations.

Upfront a small selection of hiking tips:

Lake Caldaro & Surroundings

You can hike along 200 well-signposted kilometers of paths in the surroundings of Lake Caldaro. The level of difficulty ranges from easy to medium difficult. In spring and autumn hiking is mainly on the valley floor, in midsummer easy accessible mountain peaks are refreshing alternatives. Paths lead up to Mendola, Penegal, Roen or Macaion mountain.

Mendola Mountain

Although Mendola is already part of the neighboring region of Trentino, it is still seen by the Caldaro locals as their local mountain. The easiest way up to Mendola mountain is by the Mendola funicular railway, which can be reached on foot from “Das Badl”. The Mendola funicular railway takes you within a few minutes up to the Mendola Pass, from where numerous hikes on Roen and Penegal mountain can be undertaken.

Ice holes

A “natural phenomenon”: a constant temperature of 4°C prevails in the ice holes throughout the entire year! This “wonder” can be explained by the physical principle of the wind tube. The mountain air at the Penegal flows downward through a complicated system of gaps between the porphyry blocks and cools along the way. The heavy cold air stays as a pool of cold air in a hollow. In this way at an altitude of approximately 500m plant life which can otherwise only be found in higher Alpine regions thrives.

Spring Valley

A hike through the Spring Valley from Caldaro to the Monticolo Lakes is rewarding. The climatically advantageous location allows flowers to bloom earlier in spring than in the surrounding areas.
