Wine at Hotel Badl****
Wine has obviously a quite relevant role in Caldaro and in our hotel as well. We produce wine on ourselves and therefore it’s a big concern for us to introduce you to the art of making wine. We recommend our Badl-wine and the suitable wine to our menue of the day and serve a wide range of house-wine at our bar.
We recommend to use the opportunity to participate to our weekly tour to the cellar which is over 100 years old to taste wine and distillates. We will explain the terminology of wine growers and sommeliers to you and discuss about the various flavors of wine: does the wine taste of raspberry, blackberry or even violet? What about the tannins? Is the wine mature enough or is it still too young…? Let us seduce and fascinate you with the stunning world of wine!
During the vintage in autumn you can even go along with us and learn new and interesting details about winegrowing, production, refining and bearing of wine on the didactic footpath about vineyards.
About the wine village Caldaro
Caldaro is one of the best known wine villages in South Tyrol. In Caldaro wine is part of the local culture: winegrowe is a traditional occupation and wineyards are all over! 300 days of sun support and make it easy to grow the best wine: Vernatsch, Cabernet, Merlot, Lagrein and Blaubrugunder together with some white wine such as Weißburgunder, Ruländer, Gewürztraminer, Sauvignon and Chardonnay are among the favorites!
You can experience vine culture along the wine path which crosses the wine house on market square (the main square of Caldaro) and guides you through vineyards in the area around Caldaro. You should notice along the path some lime stone-white landmarks on the ground, which disclose the historical name of the vineyards such as Keil, Ölleiten, Vial, Prunar, Puntara and Palurisch, Salt and Plantaditsch.
You should also visit the wine museum which is located in Caldaros centre. You can gain insight into the world of making wine and its historic roots when basic tools such as oxen and cart were used. You will learn what “Zummen”, “Saltner”, “Weinpergeln” and “Bottich” means!

Kalterersee Auslese… a light Vernatsch
The best known wine is for sure the Kalterersee Auslese – it’s a light, fruity Vernatsch which is one of the oldest local red wine in South Tyrol. The color of the Kalterersee Auslese varies from bright and limpid to full and lucent ruby red. The Vernatsch smells fresh and fruity and has some fragrance of cherry, red currant and even almond and violet. It’s a dry, smooth and velvet wine with low tanning agent and low acidity which delivers a pleasant and harmonious experience to your palate.
The Kalterersee Auslese can be very well combined with almost all dishes: it suits in particular the „Südtiroler Marende“, Speck, sausage, mild cheese and also mediterran starters or even Tirolean dishes.
Wein.kaltern - Events
Caldaro organises constantly events all about wine.
In June many wine growers in Caldaro open their cellars for the night of the cellars to surprise all guests with a special program.
In mid August the Musikkapelle of Caldaro organises the winefest for everybody who like enjoying wine.
During Caldaros winedays, a special event in September, everyone has the chance to taste and discuss with the Cellarmasters on Caldaros main square about their products.
Winecenter: The winecenter attracts the attention of everybody due to its modern architecture. If you want to enjoy wine or any event organized by the Kelleri Kaltern you have to go to the winecenter: the new wine-tasting facility of the Kellerei Kaltern.
